The Price of Freedom

Freedom has a price
But are we prepared to pay the toll?

Freedom is taken
Not given by default

What does it mean to be free?
Does it mean independence?
Or the ability to say what we really mean?
To speak freely

Are we really as free as we are led to believe?
Or are we bound to systems creating false imagery?

Reproduction rights taken
From victims of sexual assault
Forced to fulfil another birth
Held against their will by the state
No different to their attackers
Only a change of face

Incarcerated for narcotics planted
A scheme to supply corporations with free workers
Held behind bars
Masses are forced into unpaid labour
Modern slavery at work

Non-violent encampments at universities
Calling for divestment
Activists tired of sitting on the sidelines
Waiting for profiteers to change their ways

As soon as you are deemed a ‘nuisance’ by capitalist narcissists
They clamp down on you in full force
Their vision is clouded and warped
Chasing the dollar dangling in front of them
Despite who they hurt

Riot gear police
Fighting tooth and nail
With batons to beat down any resistance
And tear gas to close opened eyes

Freedom has a price

It means being willing to lose all that you already have
To risk the security of your job
And adopt the waves of hateful opposition
Trying to smear your name

To risk it all means that your power comes from within
No longer bound to the shackles of a tainted society

Only once you let go of everything
Can you truly be free
